“A home (with clean lines, subtle colour palettes, and simplistic furniture) defines a Modern Contemporary interior design. One of the typical features loved by many homeowners is that this theme has focused on collecting natural light. Accompanying dramatic lines and open plan spaces with softer decorations, patterns, shapes, and textures add real character to the space.”

“The homeowners actually specified what they wanted in the initial brief. They have got a lot of ornate furniture and accessories that I think will best suit the theme of Modern Oriental.

RED is the prominent colour in the Oriental style. Perhaps because it always represents the “good luck” in Chinese culture. However, the homeowners were not really keen on this color (that will possibly make their home look traditional), so they requested me to use other colours instead, such as GREEN (used as accents) and WOOD TONES.”

Actual Project in CONTEMPORARY style at 355 Woodlands Ave 1, Singapore | Work Scope: Hacking, Tiling, False Ceiling, Carpentry, Countertop, Metal Structures, Glass Doors | Budget: $80,000.

“The homeowners of this project is not limited to just the husband and wife, but also two cats (occasionally many more while fostering!), and also two incredibly talented parrots. A large Living area is critical in ensuring all the owners and pets all have a comfortable living space within the same area. The highlight of the house is undeniably the parrot’s glass enclosure, one of the few custom designed enclosure in Singapore’s home. It served as an anchor to the space while making use of odd corners within the house. Pet friendly design such as pet doors and cat bed integrated within the master bedroom’s bench were also adopted.

With a large living area, comes a really tiny kitchen, which fits a full set of appliances expected of a kitchen, a dryer, washer, and even a mechanical laundry rack.

One of the bedroom also serves as a walk in wardrobe and vanity area. Shifting the basin out of the bathroom allowed for a more generous vanity top.”

“For this home, we embraced an open concept for the kitchen area as the homeowners wanted their home to feel airy, bright, and spacious. At the same time, the open kitchen with the full-height sliding glass doors in the playroom allows the parents to work in the kitchen while still being able to keep an eye on their toddlers.

For the household shelter, we incorporated full-height mirrors on the feature wall that hid the household shelter, to make the space feel even more spacious and also allow the family to take cute #OOTD pictures. In the master bedroom, we built a wardrobe that segregated the sleeping area from the vanity area and toilet. This also gave the female homeowner a cozy vanity area to pamper herself comfortably.

Generally, the home features lots of wooden textures to align with the boho interior design style. To break the monotony, we added complementary solid colors in the smaller areas of the house, like the bathrooms and kitchen backsplash.”

“As the house has got a smaller floor area, we applied the lighter colour palettes to make the space feel more spacious but cosy at the same time. The wall between the kitchen and the living room was also hacked to make the space look even more spacious and airy.

Addtionally, we used different Floor and Wall finishes to create the distinction between the Kitchen and Living areas. With respect to the furniture, we chose Grey coloured ones, to bring out a gentle contrast, thus make it feel more “alive and dimensional”.

Last, but not least, you may notice a small Slope between the Living Area and Kitchen, as the homeowners were future-proofing the home for possible wheelchair access needs.”

“My clients have been living in this unit for over 20 years. When they first moved in, they did not do much renovation, just adding on the capentry required. As a result, they recently decided to spruce up the outlook and maximise functionality.

Overall, I was requested to create the minimalist concept for their home. My approach was to go with the Modern Scandinavian design and introduce a soothing colour palette (instead of the dark greys that were commonly chosen). On top of that, I shifted away from the art gallery feel and supposed to exude a warmer ambience for the home.”

“The concept of this design was originally developed from the natural timber flooring through the whole unit. With that as a main element of the unit, I took a further step to elevate the natural rustic-ness, by embracing more woodtone features (mostly at the dining and bedroom areas) for a bali-esque escapade. Additionally, living hall and kitchen were given a gentle touch of neutral tones to create the perfect balance of colours”

As we all know, BTO is normally small, so it’s important to have all the necessities while still guarantee their lifestyle and functionality. The main living area is a sanctuary for the homeowners to relax and for conversations to spark.

It’s great to utilize materials like rattan and wood because of their warm earthy tones properties. Additionally, neutral colour palettes were widely used, along with textured fabric, together creating the nordic scandi look.”

“Dark Moody atmosphere by using darker hues of any color. Dark colors can be used to create soft and masculine space, full of moody elegance. It’s dark, but definitely not dull. Furniture alternates between cutting clean lines and embracing mysterious curves. The result offers a different visual experience from every angle.

Dark and light tones set the stage for a dramatic interior full of contrast and change. Silky grey floors reflect every ounce of sunlight that filters through the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, while gauzy curtains maintain the atmosphere even when drawn.

Soft mood lighting illuminates the grey furniture yet the black walls fade into the background to give the illusion of a spacious theater”.

“By having the shoe cabinet lined up perpendicular to the main door, I managed to effectively elongates the foyer walkway. The back of this cabinet also purposely serves as a TV wall, that creates a relatively private dining area & living hall space.

Overall, the color schemes are primarily kept within light natural wood tones paired with mutted shades, for a comfortably light inducing effect – one of the key tips to deliver the Japandi theme.

“It feels like home”, as thankfully expressed by the lovely homeowners, was definitely the most satisfying compliment I’ve gotten from this project.”

Client’s Requirement:
– A design that allows more space is required
– The homeowners are pretty into wooden design with some modern elements (but should bring a sense of Simplicity).

“Based on the owner’s requirements, I hacked off the wall between the Living Room and Bedroom 3, to create a bigger and movable space. Additionally, I tried to inject the adaptability & possibility into my design (based on the owners’ personal lifestyle), for example: they are able to swap the sofa location with the dining table if they are bored of sitting in the same area days by days. The design of Semi-open kitchen was selected to guarantee the aesthetics and can effectively get rid off cooking odors smoke.”

“Via the use of monochromatic colours, this project creates a consistent, well defined theme throughout the entire unit. Dark themes are often associated with “small spaces” but this is actually misconceived. By dramatising strategically, bold anchor points can be created that visually connects spaces together.

For instance, an asymmetrical mirror at the end of a long hallway, lighting leading across walkways, and contrasting bathroom shower walls, are all design strategies to consider when owners are interested in darker than usual monochromatic themes.”

“I’m always into the Open Kitchen concept as it can perfectly bring the beauty to the whole living and kitchen areas. As you know, colors and materials choice are the 2 most important factors to consider when doing an open kitchen concept.

With respect to the master bedroom, I’m also not a fan of placing the TVs in the middle of the room (as it will reduce the effect of knocking down the wall). Instead, I proposed the idea to place the TVs at the corner with slanted designs”

The mixture of colors used on the wall really stands out. The proposed idea of having loose furniture is to lessen the amount of built-ins & avoid stuffy atmosphere.”

“Homeowners don’t need to be too concerned with filling up every corner of a space with furnitures. Leaving spaces open and without labelling any particular function can provide flexibility to convert the space into a lounge, study room, and even a pets corner as and when needed.

Instead of using an entire room as a study room, consider the possibility of having the dining table functioning as a study table too. The idea of flexibility and merging of functions can make an apartment feel larger than it actually is.

If you have pets, do not forget to incorporate their lifestyles into your new home too, this can often lead to surprising and unique outcomes!”
